Let me state right up front that if you want to take full advantage of today’s FamilyFirst site, it’ll cost you twelve bucks. That will buy you a year of unlimited access.
When I found that out, I almost left then and there. After all, most sites that offer content for pay will let you try them out on a trial basis. Not this one.
But here’s why I ponied up: It’s run by a not-for-profit. The twelve bucks is tax-deductible. And what they have to offer is something that is priceless to me.

The site is called REELRADIO. Its mission is summed up thusly:
The Repository is about Top 40 Radio, the last great “mass-appeal” music format, before “variety” became “diversity” and every popular music station took a small, specialized piece of what was once a very big American Pie. It’s about a time of Big Radio Stations and unforgettable Radio Heroes. It’s also about a time when little local radio stations were independently owned and important information and entertainment resources in the communities they served.
What it amounts to is this: They have thousand of archived sound bites from classical DJ’s and radio stations! For instance, did you ever wonder what Alan Freed sounded like? They have six different Freed programs, from 1954 to 1960. How about the Beatle’s fave, Murray the K? Seven, including interviewing the Beatles in their hotel room! Disco Duckster Rick Dees? Eleven recordings from 1974 to 1979.
But here’s what sold me: a TON of recordings from my beloved WLS from the 60’s through the 80’s!
I streamed a twenty minute cut of my beloved John Records Landecker doing his thing, making fun of then-President Nixon, having fun with streaking, and otherwise cutting up like I remember him doing when I was a teen.
Shock jock idiots like Howard Stern would have you think that you need to be rude and crude to be successful. The jocks you’ll hear on this site will instead impress you with wit and wits. That’s the way it USED to be, friends.
Savor today’s FamilyFirst site. It will be the best tax-deductible twelve bucks you ever spent.
